They create a musical space, they let you into it, once you're in they rock you. Easy, right? A few comments:<BR/><BR/>1. Space, yes, definitely. But I would add: The Joshua Tree is, BY FAR, the album that is most about space. And the literal space of America, particularly the American desert, is crucial to the genius of that album. I would say that Boy and PoP, for example, are less about space then Joshua Tree.<BR/><BR/>2. Interesting tidbits about your youtube link. The studio version is some dude's made up video. Production value is high, but his interpretation of the lyrics is a bit weird (I think the song is about religion and drugs and suicide, not man/woman). And the second version is a clip from Rattle and Hum, but something went wrong: it's all sped up and it's ALL WRONG. Weird.<BR/><BR/>3. u2 channels intensity differently from most rock or pop bands, and this song seems to epitomise that. For example, Edge has very few guitar solos, and the ones he does have don't sound anything like Eddie Van Halen - often they are a few notes repeated; they are always played within the chord; it's a whole different idea of 'solo'. Same thing goes for Larry and Adam. But Exit 'rocks' in this way that's totally contained within the space they create. That sentence made a lot of sense to me, in my head, but might not be clear when written out.
